Opening Remarks at the 5th Tsinghua International Symposium on Advancement of Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen，
Good morning!
It is my pleasure to be here with you all and give address at this opening ceremony. On behalf of Tsinghua University, I’d like to offer my warm greetings and welcome to everyone in attendance.
In the 21st century, medical science is increasingly playing a critical role for global development. As China's most prestigious university, Tsinghua University is dedicated to building a first-class university and a world-class medical school. During the past decade, we placed great importance on life science and medicine. Our Medical Center was recently established with the goal of serving as an interdisciplinary, excellent research and teaching institutions. We will make great efforts to build our three hospitals into the one with a first-class team of experts and facilities, and to be centers of medical professional training, teaching and scientific research.
Cardiovascular disease is a problem and challenge faced all over the world as it is the leading cause of death. The Heart Center of the First Hospital of Tsinghua University is a key department that has an experienced and innovative team. Impressive achievements have been made in the treatment of complex and critical heart problems, teaching and research. With the model of integrated cardiology and cardiac surgery, it can offer individualized optimal treatment to patients, and favors academic development that features a professional cardiovascular care team. Successful experience has been accumulated since its establishment: there have been approximately 25,000 interventional cases, and more than 5,000 open heart surgeries have been performed with great success, many of which were referrals who were critically ill. Clinical, teaching and research achievements have been made with their own characteristics.
This is the 5th of the biennial Tsinghua International Cardiovascular Symposium, with the first one occurring in 2005. I have attended four of these academic events, including the 15th Asian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (ASCVS) annual meeting in 2007. The gathering of experts from both China and all over the world make it a great event. The cutting-edge reports and in-depth discussions of clinical progress and new technologies for cardiovascular disease make this a great venue for both academic communication and the renewal of friendships.
Professor Guo Jiaqiang and Professor Xue Ganxing are two pioneers of cardiovascular surgery in China. They have made great contributions to the surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease through their lifetime devotion. We will be commemorating their achievements and spirit that have helped make great advancements to medicine in China.
I’d like to offer my best wishes for a hugely successfully conference, and I hope that everyone has a great time in Beijing!
