Prof Porter examined candidates on their clinical examination skills on real patients in the Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, and New Territories. Candidates were expected to perform physical examination on patients in a rapid and comprehensive manner, make the diagnosis, interpret imaging and lab test results, and suggest appropriate treatment for patients.

Prof Porter spoke highly of the management and coordination of the clinical examination of their faculty and staff, as well as the testing system, “At the end of the week, I felt that the students had received a fair and balanced examination, and that the Medical School had guaranteed that its graduates had sufficient knowledge and ability to start work as junior doctors. In many respects, the system reminded me of the Edinburgh system which I used to organize when I worked there for 12 years before coming to Tsinghua University over 3 years ago. I would love to think that our own hospital Surgical Residents had developed the same clinical skills as those Hong Kong students. To make sure that they do, The First Hospital of Tsinghua University is developing a ‘Clinical Examination Club’ to reinforce these examination abilities, and make-sure that none of our junior doctors are lacking in this important area of a doctor’s skill.”
