  MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS:

〉Major contributions in surgical treatment of congenital heart disease worldwide

  1. Created new procedures to treat complex congenital heart disease

  1) Developed new concepts in the technique of anatomic repair of Ebstein’s anomaly. More than 300 procedures have been performed in patients with Ebstein’s anomaly by Qingyu WU since 1997, in whom 99% of patients were able to avoid tricuspid valve replacement. These results were reported in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery,2001,122(6):1237-1238.

  2) Performed an innovative procedure for patients with Ebstein's anomaly with isolated anterior leaflet downward displacement, reported in the Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, 2014, 148 (4): 1454-1458.

  3) Modified Rastelli Procedure for double outlet right ventricle with left-malposition of the great arteries: report of 9 cases in1997, published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery,2003,75(1):138-142.

  4) Used mono pulmonary artery cusp to replace the aortic valve cusp for treating VSD with aortic valve prolapse.

  5) Total correction of DORV with TECD, CTGA, single atrium, and pulmonary stenosis.

  6) An alternative procedure for anomalous origin of left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery, reported in Ann Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery,2007, 84:2132-2133

  2. Expanded the indication and technique used in total correction of Tetralogy of Fallot in 228 patients with a mortality rate of 0.8% since 1987. These results were reported in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery,1996,61:1769-1774. This paper was commented-on by Dr. C.W.Lillehei, who was one of the pioneers in cardiovascular surgery and the first surgeon to perform the procedure of total correction of Tetralogy of Fallot. He wrote that ‘The results may be the best ever reported for a similar series undergoing total correction.’

  3. Surgical treatment of focal atrial tachycardia originating from an atrial appendage in Children, published in the Chin Med J, 2014;127(19): 3507-3509.

  4. Achieved the best results for surgical treatment of myocardial bridging in 41 patients since 1988, published in Chin Med J,2007, 120(19): 1689-1693

  5. Performed various operations of dissecting aneurysm of the interventricular septum since 1994, reported in Chinese Medical Journal,1994,107(10):794-797, the Annals of ThoracicSurgery,1997,63(2):545-547, and the European Journal of 2007Cardio-Thorcic Surgery,2002,22:517-520.

  6. Reported our experience of ascending-to-descending aortic bypass using posterior pericardium for complex coarctation of the aorta and complicated cardiac abnormalities in Journal of Cardiac Surgery, 2009, 24: 167-169.

  7. Reported our experience of surgical treatment of anomalous origin of the pulmonary artery from the right coronary artery. Published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery,2001,Oct(72):1396-1398.

〉 Numerous contributions in the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease in China

Between 1975 and 1995, only a small number of CABG operations (approx 1000) had been performed in China with a high mortality of 8-10%. In 1995 when Dr WU became the chief of Cardiovascular Department of Fuwai Hospital, many technical problems were solved, more than 1000 CABG operations were performed annually with a remarkable reduced mortality of less than 1%. He also successfully performed more than 3000 CABG complicated with valve disease, cardiomyopathy, ventricular aneurysm and so on, with mortality less than 1%. He had also trained more than 40 surgeons to do the procedures. In consequence he was granted a National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2002.

〉 Procedures firstly performed in China by Dr. Qingyu Wu:

  1. 2000-2014; Performed successful Switch procedures for TGA neonatal patients aged from 2 hours, 5 hours, 11 hours, and 26 hours after birth. All of them had a smooth recovery.

  2. 2005; Anatomic repair of Ebstein's anomaly with isolated anterior leaflet downward displacement.

  3. 21st March 2001; Implanted Novacor left ventricle assist device in a patient with congestive heart failure after myocardial infaction, and performed heart transplantation on the same patient 25 months later on 24th March 2004.

  4. 2001; Performed double switch procedure for the treatment of C-TGA.

  5. 2000; Surgical treatment of myocardial bridging.

  6. 1998; Ross procedure.

  7. 1997; Anatomic repair of Ebstein’s anomaly.

8.1997; Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy in the management of chronic pulmonary thromboembolic hypertension .

  9. 1994; Successful Heart-Lung Transplantation and the patient survived for two weeks

  10. 1994; Surgical treatment of dissecting aneurysm of the interventricular septum.

  11. 1993; Surgical treatment for anomalous origin of left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.

  12. 1989, Implanted homograft pulmonary artery valve in the surgical treatment of tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve syndrome.
